First-half goals from Stan Lazaridis and Geoff Horsfield ensured that City had ample provisions to resist the Terrier’s siege and earn a 10th successive home game without defeat.

Huddersfield’s will to win was there, but despite Craig Armstrong’s salvo just past the hour mark, the points had already been pillaged.

The Terriers have now gone 19 games without a win, and Macari will feel surely feel aggrieved to come away from his St Andrews return with nothing.

Birmingham came under early pressure and were lucky not to fall behind to Martin Smith's first time effort that slid by the post.

But shortly afterwards, Laziridis produced the perfect reposte, as he slyly eluded the attentions of Nico Vaesen and Rob Kozluk and fired home his first goal of the season.

The lead was doubled on the stroke of half-time when Horsfield was played in by Nicky Eaden, then produced a rocket left-foot shot.

But Simon Baldry’s shot over the bar after the break suggested Huddersfield weren’t about to be over-run, and so it proved.

It was the winger who found unmarked Craig Armstrong, who tucked away Huddersfield's second goal in nine games, but a third was asking just too much as Birmingham stood firm to break through the 40-point barrier.
