Match Report
Fulham must wait to be promoted to the Premiership after Bolton drew with fellow promotion chasers Birmingham at the Reebok Stadium.

The Trotters grabbed two goals in a minute to reverse Birmingham's half-time lead, but Marcelo's deft finish on 57 minutes gave his side a well-deserved point.

It snapped the Blues' dreadful run of four defeats on the spin, but still leaves them with just two points from their last eight games - hardly promotion form.

The game, watched by both Fulham players and Blackburn manager Graeme Souness, was a lively affair throughout and despite some early pressure by the home side, Birmingham took the lead with a cracker of a goal. Andy Johnson's cross was deflected to the edge of the box and Martin O'Connor did not even have to break stride to fire a howitzer into the top corner.

Bolton may have had the lion's share of possession, but even before O'Connor's screamer, Johnson had forced goalkeeper Matt Clarke into a brilliant save at his feet after braeking quickly.

Sam Allardyce had to wait until the 53rd minute before his side were level and after finally finding the net, they managed it twice in a minute. Both, however, owed a great deal to luck.

Firstly, Gundi Bergsson missed his header from six yards, yet fortunately, the ball cannoned off his shoulder and into the top corner. He did deserve the luck though, as seconds earlier he had connected perfectly with a header only to see Ian Bennett pull off a tremendous save.

Immediately from the restart, Ricardo Gardner floated over a wonderful ball to the far post and second-half substitute Dean Holdsworth nodded against the bar. It bounced down onto the line and out, but the assistant referee performed like a Russian linesman and awarded the goal.

They held the lead for just two minutes however, although Clarke will feel that he should have done better. Marcelo hooked a cross back across goal and, seemingly in slow motion, the on-loan stopper could only help the ball into the corner.

That was the way it stayed, meaning that Fulham were forced to put their champagne on ice, and hardly helps either side's chances of sneaking past Blackburn into the second automatic promotion spot.

Bolton may feel aggrieved however, after Bergsson broke free after a delightful dummy and was pulled back by Darren Purse, but referee Graham Poll did not point to the spot and they had to settle for a point.
