| Record signing Paul Furlong arrived from Chelsea during the summer of 1996 for a fee of £1.5 million and topped the appearance charts last season with 49 showings. He was disappointed to hit the target just 12 times but made up for the lack of goals with his build-up play and 100 per cent effort. He started his career with non-league Enfield, where he was regularly getting top flight scouts coming to watch him. It was Coventry City who were first to his signature and he spent a season at Highfield Road before dropping down a division to join Watford. He proved his striking excellence at Vicarage Road with a goal ratio of one every two games that persuaded Premiership Chelsea to splash out £2.3 million to take him to Stamford Bridge. He notched 13 goals in 46 games at the South London club before his change of Blues to St. Andrew's. Finished top scorer last season with 19 goals and after a injury blighted start to the 98/99 campaign hit goal-scoring form and signed a new three contract with Blues in February 1999, tying him to the club until 2004. |
