Trevor Francis equalled the club's record transfer fee of £1.5 million to bring this Northern Ireland international to St. Andrew's to bolster his unbeaten side. McCarthy made his debut in the following Sunday's televised clash against Sunderland which saw Blues lose their first in 18 competitive games. An exciting winger whose natural skill is matched in equal amounts by his enthusiasm for the game.  After a slow start to his Blues career, McCarthy has shown this season glimpses of the form that made him such a hit at Vale Park, although, by his own admission he would like to score more goals.
