| Highly rated goalkeeper who has caught the
attention of several top flight clubs since former Blues manager Barry Fry made him his
first St. Andrew's signing after just six days at the helm. He squashed summer transfer
rumours by signing a new contract to pledge his future to the Blues for another three
years. Ian Bennett considers his Wembley appearance in the 1-0 Auto Windscreens Shield
victory over Carlisle in 1995 as the highlight of his career so far. He began as a trainee
at QPR before joining Newcastle United. After spending 18 months in the reserve team at
St. James Park he moved onto Peterborough United where he finally gained valuable first
team experience and earned a reputation as a fine shot stopper. In December 1993 Fry was suitably persuaded to splash out £325,000 on the young keeper who made his debut against local rivals West Bromwich Albion in front of a full house at St. Andrew's. Ever-present in the 1997-1998 season, until he was forced to miss the final game of the season through injury. Lost his place in the side to Kevin Poole at the beginning of November 1998, and very nearly moved to Sheffield United as part of swap deal involving Alan Kelly, until United pulled the plug. Was forced to watch the last two thirds of the season as the impressive Poole kept him out of the side. He has now gone on the transfer list after not being able to agree terms for a new contract. |
