| Geoff became Blues' record signing when Jean Tigana arrived at Craven Cottage, described his style as "too aggressive" and hastily opted to let the strapping Yorkshireman go. He signed a five year contract with Birmingham City as Trevor Francis shook up a forward line that had helped deliver consecutive play-off finishes but less than prolific returns in front of goal. Horsfield started out with Scarborough in Division Three as a 17-year-old, but gave up his professional status to play for Guiseley and then Witton while he worked in the construction industry. He spent a year in the Conference with Halifax Town before they gained promotion and the present England manager whisked him out of the Third in October 1998. By the time Keegan succeeded Glenn Hoddle in February 1999 on a provisional four-game contract, chants of 'Horsfield for England' were sweeping West London. Much has been made of his Vinnie-Jonesesque background, but former hod-carrier and brickie Horsfield has scored goals in each of the lower divisions and distinguished himself against Premiership opposition - in particular Tottenham Hotspur - during the cup runs Fulham enjoyed during his stay. |
